PRODUCTION : Defining your original artist or programme

Complete the following categories as listed to help plan key content of your production and initial ideas about the audiovisual production. This will help ensure the print task ( magazine cover/article or DVD covers/poster ) are effective and you have a clear concept of your cross-media production and the tasks relate to each other effectively.

Artist /programme title ( must be a new original artist or programme )  

Genre ( including any related subgenres )

Brief summary of artist / programme (biography / overall content, characters  and themes) 

Similar artists/programmes  ( similar in genre/audience and must have been released by target producer )

Song  to use  / TV episode plot  summary 

( the song you use  can be an existing release but must not have an official music video)

Initial Narrative/ performance  ideas for video/sequence

Initial ideas for use or subversions of genre conventions 

Initial ideas for use of technical codes in video/sequence  e.g lighting, settings , props and costume, use of camera 

PRODUCTION : Producer research

You need to research information  about the  potential producers  of your media products to ensure that any ideas you have are well-targeted and suitable.  

Depending upon which brief you have chosen , summarise and explain the following , giving examples and statistics where necessary e.g viewing figures , record sales

Television :  BBC3 and E4

Brief history of channel , links to other channels

Summary of content :genres broadcast, most popular weekly programmes  

Channel identity, statement  or mission 

Most successful recent programmes ( audience figures/critical success )

Any examples of programmes similar in theme /genre to your initial ideas aimed at the required target audience

Music Marketing  :  Atlantic Records and Capital Records 

Brief history of record company, links to other companies or labels

Summary of content : genres released , examples of range of artists

Most successful recent  releases ( sales/critical success )

Any examples of artists/releases similar in style or genre  to your initial ideas aimed at the required target audience

After your research is completed , select which one of the potential  producers you have researched you will be using for your media production, based on which you feel suits your idea/genre/audience most closely. 

COMPONENT 3 PRODUCTION : Initial selection and planning

Your practical coursework tasks will be planned and drafted and then completed by  January 2022

In the next few weeks you will be completing initial research and planning into your chosen brief, planned products and target audience.

  Read the assignment briefs carefully and select which of the options  ( Television or Music Marketing) for a cross-media production  ( 2 linked media products) you will be completing.

 

Summarise the products , producer and audience .

List  any initial ideas about your print and audiovisual products; name of magazine/ artist., detail about genre or narrative etc.

 

PAPER 1 A Key text : Beyonce FORMATION MUSIC VIDEO ( 2016)

Contexts :    

Summarise the social , political and historical  events and issues  that are directly  referenced  in the video. 

Star persona : 

How does Beyonce present herself in this video ? Personality, use of sexuality and sex appeal , perspective on social events ? Is she just a glamorous pop star dressing up  or expressing something more profound ? Is she representing something beyond herself ? 

Representation :  

Find some examples from the video of the different ways social issues , ethnicity, gender and any other factors  are represented in the video , focusing on social status and power as well as any use or subversion of stereotypes. Look at relevant technical codes like iconography and costume,framing, camera angles and lighting/colour. What are the messages in the video ?

PAPER 1 A BEYONCE Music videos

 

In preparation for our analysis of the key case study ( Beyonce : Formation ) please choose  two other  official  music videos  by Beyonce from throughout her career and summarise how  the following are used in different ways.

You can work individually or in pairs and please publish on the blog by Friday

Style of video  Is the video primarily focused on the artist's performance or a storytelling narrative ?

 Star Persona 

 Which elements of Beyonce's personality and persona does the video focus on and highlight ? Romantic partner, independent woman , social activist ,  sex object , glamorous and aspirational role model ?

Themes  and issues  explored in the song and video  e.g politics, relationships , ambition , love and  commitment 

Representation of gender and ethnicity in the video e.g stereotypes, contrasts, social status etc.

Technical codes to support your points e.g costume, performance, body language, lighting and colour, camera angles and shot types, pace of editing  etc.
